Fabulous Friday - Maria & Mark

Friday, November 15, 2013 5:34:44 PM America/Los_Angeles

And we're back! Check out our adorable couple Maria & Mark!!!

Couple: Maria & Mark

Date & Location: May 4, 2013 in Calgary, Alberta

Wedding Theme:

"We had a very rustic & casual wedding. Most elements were DIY including my veil, the flowers, the decor, and the cake. In order for my parents (who are quite traditional) to understand our choices, the word we used was rustic. It worked like a charm. The emphasis that day was on us - not a specific theme."

Dress: Hastings on Hudson with a chiffon petticoat

Favorite Moment:

"My favourite moment of the wedding is hard to choose. It all felt like a dream. The part I go back to again and again in my mind was when we were pronounced husband and wife and a joyous Ukrainian wedding march started playing and everyone started clapping along as we hi-fived our way down the aisle. Once we were out of the room, we both started crying from happiness. That was a great feeling!"

What Made You Choose Dolly Couture:

"I chose Dolly Couture quite early in my engagement. We were engaged for 2.5 years and after only 4 months, I had already decided that I wanted to order a DC dress. I was sent to LA for a work conference and took that opportunity to visit the showroom with one of my closest friends. I tried on all the styles I liked and we took pictures. I hadn't settled on a design, but I knew that it would be one of the ones I tried that day.  We finally selected a wedding date (1.5 years later!) and I knew that the Hastings on Hudson was the dress for me. It was an easy choice. I did not set foot in another bridal salon. I did not comparison shop. I knew I was a Dolly Bride from day 1, and that made it easy!"

Any Advice for Future Dolly Couture Brides?

"My advice to other Dolly Brides would be to keep it simple, trust your instincts, and ask a ton of questions! Nikki helped me so much during the ordering process. She made suggestions for my lace and organza underlay and I was so happy with the result."

Happy Halloween

Thursday, October 31, 2013 1:14:14 PM America/Los_Angeles

Happy Halloweeen Y'all!

We have a very special bride featured today - my 10 year old red-headed stepdaughter! (Literally) She's not your typical blushing bride....she's a zombie. An undead child zombie bride. Creepy. Yes. Bizarre. Yes. Totally awesome. Absolutely yes!

When she told me she wanted to be a zombie bride, my ears perked up.  I have an okay sewing skill set - perfect for costumes that are only seen at night.  I have a wee bit of knowledge about the construction of gowns (I mean I should right? I work for a couture wedding dress company), so I thought I would give it a shot.  Her dress was very loosely based on a Verona bodice and an Avila Bay tulle skirt without the poof.

It took me about three days to complete the look, including the veil.  I was proud of my accomplishment, but as I got closer to finishing the dress I became a bit saddened at the thought of distressing my "masterpiece".  Even though I knew in my heart it was the best thing to do...distress it to take eyes away from the weirdo seams, the lopsided capped sleeve, the ill-fitting bodice. Now that would make it perfect.

It was a very rewarding experience working with her.  I took her to the fabric store.  I let her choose her own fabric and pattern.  She even picked out the zipper.  She helped every step of the way and asked questions the whole time.  I felt like Tim Gunn.  Hello designers!  But the best part was seeing her soaking up everything I was teaching her.  I didn't think she would be into sewing at all, but she totally is.  I am even signing us both up for sewing classes at the local JoAnne's. And I need it!

I love that she thinks my job is cool.  I love she is interested in fashion.  I love she wants her own sewing machine for Christmas. She even watches Project Runway with me.  It's an amazing feeling knowing that I inspired her.   And all of this over a Halloween costume.

Anyway, I digress....here are the before and after pics of my masterpiece.  After is definitely MUCH better.  And that is why I will not be personally making your dress. You're welcome.

Fabulous Friday - Kyle & Chuck

Friday, October 4, 2013 3:22:23 PM America/Los_Angeles

Oh boy! Check out the touch of geek chic Kyle and Chuck added to their wedding. A zombie (adorable) cake topper and Game of Thrones brews? And a vintage touch? Come one! A bride truly after my own heart!

Couple: Kyle & Chuck

Wedding Date & Location: July 2013 in an old historic school house in Hingham, MA

Wedding Theme:

"Our wedding was sweet, very romantic, a little quirky, and just a blast for everyone who was there. I put lots of my own handmade touches into the day, and we had so much help from our family and friends. I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, so three of my cousins sang his song "If I Should Fall Behind" during the ceremony. We had readings from Calvin & Hobbes and The Little Prince, and in my vows I promised Chuck I would fight by his side when the zombies attack. In his vows, Chuck quoted Little Women (one of my favorite books). We also had fireworks at our wedding (a lucky coincidence)"

Dress: Kyle wore our Moon River gown. Kyle writes, "It was perfect. I have always loved Audrey Hepburn so as soon as I saw that dress I knew it would be mine, and when I tried it on in the store it was a storybook moment...I had found my dress! I received so many compliments throughout the evening on how unique and perfect for me the dress was."

Favorite moment from the wedding:

"My favorite moment of the whole wedding was when everyone was outside on the dance floor, and Stand By Me started playing just as the fireworks began to explode across the sky. Chuck and I spontaneously started to slow dance in the grass under the fireworks...such a magical moment. Another really special aspect of our wedding was that one of the oldest cemeteries in the country is directly behind our venue. I love things that are kind of creepy (Chuck proposed to me in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland), so it seemed perfect to have our photographer take some photos of us walking through the cemetery...the pictures came our beautifully and are so unique and so very "us"!"

Congratulations to both of you!

Fabulous Friday - Alycia & Stephen

Friday, August 9, 2013 1:47:03 PM America/Los_Angeles

We love a good outdoor summer wedding!

Couple: Alycia & Stephen

Wedding Date & Location: July 26th, 2013 at their 112 year old farmhouse (yes, built in 1901!) in Estacada, OR

Wedding Theme:

"We didn't really have a theme beyond wanting to have it outside, in the summer. We had our ceremony under an ancient walnut tree and dinner on the lawn. It was a lovely, perfect summer evening."

Dress: Alycia wore the Avila Bay dress in ivory lace, with the champagne thread and waist. She had it customized by bringing the lace off the shoulders a little and made into cap sleeves.

Favorite moment from the wedding:

"My favorite moment from the wedding was right after the ceremony. My new husband and I, along with our wedding party, popped a bottle of champagne, and I relaxed for the first time in a month! I also loved seeing our friends and relatives all getting to know each other and dancing together. I think one of the most fun things at any wedding is watching people from different walks of life, all coming together to celebrate."

What made you choose DC?

"I was engaged for maybe a day before I thought about what I was going to wear. :) I was looking up short weddings gowns online and just fell in love with the gowns at Dolly Couture. Luckily for me, we were living in New York at the time so I was able to make an appointment to try on gowns in the showroom. I tried on the Avila Bay gown and it was just perfect. I ordered it on the spot!"

Advice for future DC brides:

"Try not to sweat the small stuff. I just about went crazy trying to plan for every little detail, but in the end, you're going to forget something. Ask for help if you need it. Our friends and families were so wonderful about pitching in to help us get our home tip-top before the wedding. Also, have fun and enjoy each moment and each other. This is the one day that is all about the two of you, so make sure to steal a few minutes where you can focus on each other, amidst all the madness!"

Congratulations Alycia & Stephen! We love the story about the ring!

Fabulous Friday - Sarah & Aaron

Friday, August 9, 2013 1:47:03 PM America/Los_Angeles

Even Southern Belle's wear short wedding dresses! Let's meet Sarah & Aaron!

Couple: Sarah and Aaron

Wedding Date & Location: April 20th, 2012 in St. Francisville, LA

Wedding Theme:

"I guess the best way to describe it is 'Spring in Plantation Country'.  We wanted a laid back wedding in my parents' hometown with lots of green- the weather couldn't have been better for us!"

Dress: Sarah wore the Avila Bay in ivory with a lace skirt.

Favorite moment from the wedding:

"Seeing my husband for the first time in my dress. We did a 'first look' before the wedding so we could get straight to the reception with our friends and family after the ceremony. Our photographer did an amazing job of setting this moment up for us in front of The Myrtles Plantation. Those were some of the best moments for us. Another favorite moment was during the ceremony - I put Aaron's ring on the wrong hand, realized it and quickly changed hands. He turned to our friends and family and said, 'Sorry y'all, we haven't done this before!' It was perfect."

What made you choose DC?

"I knew I wanted a different dress that would be flattering and would fit my personality.  A short dress was something I was set on. When we were planning our wedding, we were living in NYC. I was very lucky to be able to go to the showroom there. My mom pointed out the Avila Bay because she loved the lace. I tried it on to humor her, thinking I wasn't a lace kind of girl. Turns out I was - Mom always knows what's best!"

Advice for future DC brides:

"Have the time of your life - If you are the kind of girl who chooses a Dolly dress, then I know you are a girl who likes to have fun! It's a day I relive with my husband often - the memories are so amazing because we made the day about us and focused on each other.  We got to dance like crazy people with all of our best friends and family in one place for several hours. When is that happening again?!"

Congrats Sarah & Aaron! We love the story about the ring!

Fabulous Friday - Vanessa & Shawn

Friday, August 2, 2013 4:45:07 PM America/Los_Angeles

Check out this leading lady and her dashing beau! Let's meet Vanessa & Shawn!

Couple: Vanessa & Shawn

Wedding Date: October 14, 2012

Wedding Theme: Classic Hollywood

Dress: Vanessa wore our Beverlywood.  She customized it by changing the fabric to satin instead of the standard taffeta.  She also customized the length to fit her frame better.

Favorite moment from the wedding:

"Arriving at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas and seeing 23 of our dearest friends and family waiting for us. Everyone said it was like stepping back in time which is exactly the look we wanted. It was truly surreal especially with a visit from the King of Rock and Roll."

What made you choose DC?

"I always knew I wanted a short wedding dress. I felt a traditional wedding dress would drown my 5 foot frame in fabric. After zero luck in Montreal stores, I decided to try online. Dolly Couture is a dream come true. At first I was hesitant about ordering online but the customer service was fantastic and I loved the idea of custom measurements. I’m so glad I did because the Beverlywood dress was perfect in every way."

Advice for future DC brides:

"I recommend ordering a sample of the fabric swatches. It really helped me chose the color and feel I liked best."

Congrats Vanessa & Shawn!

Fabulous Friday - Robin & Ken

Friday, July 26, 2013 12:32:43 PM America/Los_Angeles

It's once again Fabulous Friday here at Dolly Couture, and check out this retro gal! This wedding sounded super fun and hip!

Couple: Robin & Ken

Robin and Ken

Wedding Date: April 27, 2013

Robin C wedding party

Wedding Theme:

"We had a rockabilly wedding, complete with a classic car, tattoo flash, pinup and greaser stations, a rocking band with an upright bass, and loads of smiling faces."

Robin and Ken

Dress: Robin wore our Luxor.  Robin customized with a net/organdy stand alone petticoat (check out our accessories section) in peacock. She also added a 3/4 length bolero.  Robin also had straps made and a custom sash to match her petticoat.

Robin C

Favorite moment from the wedding:

"A little back story to my favorite moment of my wedding...The day before I met Ken I told my cousin that all I wanted was to meet a nice greaser, who rides a motorcycle and would sing me Elvis songs. Ken is a greaser and rides a motorcycle, and until our wedding day had never sang me an Elvis song. And then he got up, in front of all of our family and friends to sing "Teddy Bear" with the band. It was a wonderful surprise to me, and my definitely my favorite moment."

Robin and Ken

What made you choose DC?

"When I went to find a wedding dress, I knew I wanted a short dress which is not common, and I knew I wanted a personal experience. The second I stepped into the NYC store, I knew I was not walking out without being an owner of a DC bridal dress."

Robin and Ken

Advice for future DC brides:

"My advice for future DC brides is to step back and look around and just enjoy the moment. Yvette was amazing to boot. She knew exactly what would look best on me. The dress I bought wasn't even one I had in mind. Once I tried it on, I was in love."

Robin has told me she plans on dying her dress so she can wear it again. Congrats Robin & Ken!
